The Ground Zero Mosque and “Islamaphobia”

Andolinis Pizza, 82 Wentworth Street, Downtown

Two-thirds of Americans polled believe that building a mosque two blocks from “Ground Zero” in Manhattan is wrong. One-third think the government should stop it from happening.  Oh yeah, and one-fourth think President Obama is a Muslim. What do you think?  Do Muslims have a right to build centers of worship near the now-hallowed place attacked by radical Muslims?  Is Obama secretly prostrating himself toward Mecca?  Is this a debate we should even be having, or is it a sign of a growing “islamaphobia” in the American psyche?  Join us for a conversation on the details of the Cordoba House and its wider meaning for Islam in the United States.

Spirituality and Religion…The Follow-Up!

Andolinis Pizza, 82 Wentworth Street, Downtown

In July we brought together two distinct views on spirituality and religion, one from a Unity Church pastor and the other from a Orthodox Christian priest. Basically, people couldn’t stop talking about it, so for this talk we’ll analyze some of the points that were raised by the speakers and their congregants in attendance.  In addition, we’ll attempt to flesh out the practical implications of incorporating certain elements of spirituality or religion into faith communities.

September 29th                    PSA College Ministry, 5:30 p.m.
  Bell Choir, 6 p.m.
  Adult Choir, 7 p.m.
September 30                       Alpha 6-8 p.m.

The Ethics of Capitalism

With Guest Host, Don McLaurin

Andolinis Pizza, 82 Wentworth Street, Downtown

Is capitalism a force for good or evil in the world?  When the system that has brought Western nations the highest standard of living in the history of the world is also connected to child labor factories in the developing world—there is no simple answer.  But the reality remains the same: capitalism, in some form, is here to stay. Join for a fascinating talk moderated by guest-host, church elder and businessman, Don McLaurin, on living ethically in culture of capitalism.

Windows Project. As a congregation celebrating its Bicentennial, as a downtown church in a historic city, and as a church family, we are uniquely positioned for many opportunities. These opportunities are spiritual, logistical and philanthropic, and each of us will more than likely seize several of each over the Bicentennial Celebration period. It's rare when all of these things come together at once, but that is the case with our Celebrating 200; Planning for Another 200 historic window project. As stewards of the incredible structure in which we worship, it is our privilege to contribute to have these beautiful architectural assets refurbished to their appropriate splendor. To learn more about how you can make a difference in this project and leave a lasting tribute for your family, please contact Bud Hay (795-2916) or Greer Polansky (849-9720).
