Our New Theologians

On Sunday, November 16th, “Kindergarten Sunday Recognition of Caregivers” began with little children singing in the grand, old church. The 5 and 6 year olds on the stage in front of the altar were concentrated and serious. The 3 and 4 year olds on the floor below sang loudly and enthusiastically. After the singing, all the teachers were introduced. Each of them got up when called upon.

The worship continued for a while, and then the children were asked to come up front again. Kingsley, with a big basket of yellow chrysanthemums started the children’s sermon:
“I brought really beautiful flowers. What makes them so beautiful?”
“God!” announced a little boy’s voice.
“What’s the difference between them?” Kingsley kept asking.
Some of the girls answered, “The number of petals. Some of them are longer.”
“What does it remind you of?”
“God’s love,” said the same little boy.
“You are so smart,” Kingsley said. “It reminds me of you, us. Everybody looks different, but everyone is beautiful.”
The children each received a flower before departing from the church.

In the car on the way home I asked my 5-year old daughter, “What was that song about: ‘He has got the whole world in his hands?” These explanations came from the back seat:
“About Jesus holding the cars, trees, people, and God in his hands. Or God holding Jesus in his hands? Wait. Jesus died long ago, it means he is holding God in his hands. And my grandmother (who died last year) is holding God in her hands.”

I am sure you have heard a lot of profound discoveries by our young theologians after they attended church.
