Dear Second Family,
Roy Rodgers, the King of the Cowboys, sang “Don’t Fence me In” in Hollywood Canteen of 1944. The lyrics spoke to the love of the open sky and a spirit that was free range.
I thought of this as I considered the passage from Mark for this Sunday.
The disciples wanted to pause. Life with Jesus had drained them of their giddy-up. Besides, they had a place to stay at Simon’s mother-in-law’s and folks from all over the community were crowding to be seen and healed by Jesus. Why not stay put for a bit?
But Jesus had places to go and a message to proclaim. He got up early, went to pray and was on to the next village, to the next encounter with an urgency that only he could know. Jesus stayed focused - "Let's go to the rest of the villages so I can preach there also. This is why I've come." Is our mission this clear?
The preaching text is Mark 1:29-39.
See you in church –
